For Single Parents

Wednesday Night Single Parent Support Group

Our Wednesday Night Single Parent Support Group runs from mid-September to mid-June. Every first and third Wednesday night of the month, single parent families gather at 5:30p.m. to meet and support one another. Our single parents come from a range of different sizes, ethnic backgrounds and challenges.

A typical night would follow this schedule:

  • 5:30pm – Friendship and Healthy Living Time.
  • 6:15pm – Free and nutritious family dinner.
  • 7:00pm – Single Parent Support Group meeting where resource speakers from the community and social agencies present relevant topics for discussion to single parents.
  • 7:00pm – Childcare provided for children under 5. Activities and programs for children 5 and over.

Time is given to allow volunteers and families to connect and debrief with each other by offering a listening ear and support. Group meetings also offer to parents resource speakers from support agencies that are brought in to present relevant topics. They assist single parents in their life skills and further build resources with the single parent. Childcare is provided for children 5 and under, and activity programs are also provided for youth during this time.

Harvest Pantry
Families Living Well Society recognizes one of the biggest issues with single parents is food security. Many parents work and when they attend meetings, and families often arrive without being fed, so the evening begins with a nutritious dinner prepared by volunteers. A majority of the food is donated by the Edmonton Food Bank.

Parents are provided opportunities to gain cooking skills, and learn nutritious menu planning. Parents pay a small amount per mouth and work together with other parents to prepare meals for their family.
